Elena Walch, Lagrein, Alto Adige D.O.C. 2018
If you’re into trying new wines from around the globe, then you’re in for a treat with this wine! Because Elena Walch’s Lagrein wine is not a traditional rustic Italian wine!
This Lagrein wine by celebrated Italian woman winemaker, Elena Walch, has medium body and high alcohol and backed with remarkable acidity. With hints of cocoa and dark chocolate, aromas of sweet cherries and mixed berries, this wine is quite delightful on the nose. After a few swirls in the glass, it opens up and starts to give warm aromas of spiced cherry compote. On the palate, its velvety tannins and smooth mouthfeel, make it an excellent food companion
What's Lagrein Grape?
Legrein is a red grape variety cultivated in the Alto Adige and Trentino in Northern Italy. It’s the region’s second most planted red variety after Schiava. Wines made from Legrein are deeply colored, with rustic notes, and can develop with age.
How to Pair Elena Walch Lagrein Wine?
I would go with the obvious pairing, like regional food such as veal schnitzel. This can be a dinner wine, and a wine to relax (i.e. after dinner, or when the kids go to sleep)–a small assortment of charcuterie and mild cheese should sound great with it, and why not enjoy itt with some dark chocolate too!
Other pairing options: beef stew and roasted vegetables and spiced roast chicken
Serve at 18°C/65°F

Who is Elena Walch?
From the beginning, Elena Walch initiated her winemaking philosophy with dedication to terroir, elegance, quality and innovation. She started her wine journey back in the 1990’s when she married into one of Alto Adige’s (Northeastern Italy) deeply rooted and distinguished winemaking families. She smoothly transitioned to winemaking after being an architect by trade. Under her leadership, the family winery was modernized and adapted to enter the Italian and global wine scene with a new perspective. Her revolutionary vision brought new winemaking technologies, and commitment to reviving local grapes, in addition to focusing on the individual expression of soil, climate and viticulture. From an early stage, Elena Walch has been endorsing and applying sustainability practices in the vineyard, and her efforts have led to local and international recognition.
Elena’s wines express unique character and elegance, reflecting her winemaking style, from fresh and fruity white wines to robust and velvety red wines.
